Rodrigo Garcia (aka Squaric): “I started with organizing some illegal raves in Zarate”

By Bonnie Lener

March 27, 2017

Rodrigo Garcia a.k.a Squaric is the owner of the Diffuse Reality record label.

He has made a name on the techno scene over time. Thanks to several releases on his label but also on SUBSIST or Rafarta Records, Squaric is a complete artist. This mix is particularly special as it was Squaric’s rythmic industrial noise set during a audio-visual carater experimental event at OFF SONAR week in Barcelona this year.

Today, I had the chance to meet him and ask him a few questions.

Can you tell us more about Diffuse reality?

Diffuse Reality is an independent record label. Its conductive path is Techno, but you may also find albums and sound releases that are different but that we also like like : Electro, Acid, Ambient, Industrial, IDM, etc…

Your track of the moment?

Esplendor Geométrico – Kakazaharra

A track you’ll still be listening to in 30 years?

Dopplereffekt – Hyperelliptic Surfaces

What do you like doing during your free time except from Djing?

Eat barbecue and drink some good wine.

When did you start DJing – and what or who were your early passions and influences?

At the end of 2006, I started to organize some illegal raves in Zarate, a town in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Those events took place in abandoned places, like gas or train stations. There were clearly illegal raves, but super underground and with a really special energy, really special… It’s from that moment, I decided to start everything.

Can you recommend two DJs to us whom you feel deserve their attention?

Jeff Mills & Sunil Sharpe.

How do you feel about how this new increase in access to making electronic music?

I think it’s very interesting and positive that now everyone can access to make electronic music. It’s something important and we should exploit it, not only record labels but also bring to light the new talents.

In the last years, more and more successful DJs started their own label, their own party, etc… What was for you the reasons to start Diffuse Reality and what’s the concept behind it?

I started my first project in 2011. It was a netlabel called Kidnapping (you can still find the releases on the web, they are free!). This netlabel had experimental, industrial, IDM and Techno influences. With time I was looking forward to give a turn to this project, and then after a few years of work, I decided to create Diffuse Reality Records. The concept of the label? I won’t tell, I will let you discover it by yourself!

Can you tell us about your future releases and projects?

In a few weeks, my track Ravereando will be published in a vinyl format for the record label HC of Valencia. Moreover, my next EP is finalized but I am still thinking where I want to see it published.

Lastly, I can tell you I am working on my second album and I hope it will be ready by the end of the year.

Squaric will be in Barcelona for a special night presented by This Side Up and Xceed.
