From stratospheric graphics to the most modern futurism. The hairstyles, the clothes, the faces, the colours, the fonts, the designer’s trippy drawings, the charm of the artists. The vinyl artwork is a fundamental part of the whole product devoted to the reproduction of the musicians, bands and DJs’ efforts, and also one of the reasons for buying a particular vinyl.
Keeping that in mind, why not round up all the album covers in a contest to decide which of them is the best. Obviously, it’s such a good idea that someone has already thought about creating an album art competition and it has been active for the last 12 years.
The Best Art Vinyl Awards has nominated the best artwork of 2017, choosing some of the world’s greatest artists such as Bicep, Four Tet, Mount Kimbie, Actress, Gorillaz and many others.
The finalists of this competition were selected by a group of music industry design experts and by the previous winners of the Best Art Vinyl Prize who identified a list of 50 covers of the new vinyls released in 2017. Today, Thursday 16th of November the vote opens to the public who will decide the winner of this competition.
Along with the launch of this year’s contest, the founder of Art Vinyl, Andrew Heeps, has announced that an exhibition of the winners of the previous editions of Best Art Vinyl Awards has been prepared.
The exhibition includes 100 album projects that will invade the UK and Europe art galleries starting from January 9th with the inauguration of this exhibition at the Hari Hotel in London. On the same day, the winner of this year’s contest will be announced.
Heep shared his thoughts about the vinyl culture, the artworks and the nominees of this year: ” In 2017 I’ve often wondered, what is the motivation for people when buying new vinyl, the art or the music or probably both. It is therefore the sleeve design that becomes the visual expression and identity for the music contained within. For something of that importance to the consumer, our annual Best Art Vinyl Award is a real celebration of these 50 nominated artworks and the designers behind the finished article”.
