Demonstrations, events and lots of electronic music – this is the way International Workers’ Day is being celebrated in Germany these days.
There are two factors inherent in the essence of the German people that are reaffirmed year after year: the battle for fundamental rights and the passion for electronic music. And, unsurprisingly, there is an event that has embraced both for several decades.
Every May 1st, Berlin and many other German cities are flooded with revolutionary vibes, street parties and electronic music in every corner of the city to put the beat to Labour Day. The latter, originally featuring trade unions, political speeches and gatherings, has taken on a more danceable feel, but still keeping the values of rebellion and chaos in mind.
Clashes with the police, anti-fascism and anarchy are the “norm” throughout the day with Berlin as the epicentre. And like any revolution in Germany, the culmination of freedom is achieved with electronic music as a tool, turning this date into a hybrid between the kick-off of summer and protests for social justice and equality.
