EX MA.TER, the former municipal slaughterhouse of Sassari, is a significant example of late 19th-century industrial heritage. Built in 1895 to replace the old facility near Porta Rosello and the Civic Market, it was financed by Cavalier Maurizio Pintus and designed by the municipal technical office led by engineer Gavino Canalis. Located in the southern area of the city, known as “La Cruzitta,” the complex is structured around a series of pavilions organized according to the different processing stages and types of livestock. The architecture features distinctive elements of great character, including the arched entrance gate, sculpted jambs with ram heads, and the “pio bove” sculpture by artist Zichina. During the 20th century, additional structures were introduced, such as the large platform scale (1937) and a garage (1949). Today, EX MA.TER stands as a unique venue where historical identity meets contemporary use, offering a distinctive setting for cultural and event experiences.
