Joey Negro is the best-known pseudonym of British DJ, producer and remixer Dave Lee, one of the most influential figures in soulful and disco-influenced house music. Active since the late 1980s, Lee was among the first producers to fuse disco samples with house, helping shape and popularise the genre worldwide. Known for his meticulous approach to grooves, hooks and arrangements, he remains a benchmark for musical quality and authenticity.
Closely linked to the rise of UK house culture, Lee worked with Rough Trade and Rhythm King before founding Republic Records in 1988, one of the UK’s first soulful house labels. He later launched Z Records, home to many of his most celebrated releases. Tracks such as “Do It Believe It”, “Do What You Feel”, “Love Fantasy”, “Must Be The Music” and “American Booty” achieved major club and chart success, while projects like Raven Maize, Z Factor, Jakatta and The Sunburst Band showcased his versatility and commitment to live musicianship.
Throughout his career, Lee has produced and remixed music for an extraordinary range of artists including Diana Ross, Grace Jones, Bob Marley, Mariah Carey, Róisín Murphy, Pet Shop Boys and Take That. Alongside contemporaries such as Nile Rodgers and Daft Punk, he has been instrumental in keeping disco culture alive into the 21st century.
A respected collector and curator, Lee has compiled numerous acclaimed compilations, notably the “Remixed With Love” series, which topped sales charts and earned industry awards. His 2017 album *Produced With Love* reaffirmed his dedication to newly recorded, disco-inspired music crafted with care rather than nostalgia.
After nearly three decades, Joey Negro’s discography, DJ credentials and deep musical knowledge have secured his status as one of the most important and enduring figures in dance music history.
