Chalo Correia

Chalo Correia

Info

Chalo Correia is a talented singer-songwriter born in Luanda, in 1968. He lived his childhood in the most intense and blazing music period of Angola (the 70s): when musicians were fighting for independence without guns, reinventing the Angolan sound in order to re-establish their identity. During this turbulent and euphoric time, Chalo had no opportunity to play any music instrument so he and other kids were making their own guitars out of olive cans stringed with bike cables. In late youth he got to meet musicians from the revolutionary bands like Os Merengues, and Os Kiezos that would influence his future music. In the beginning of the 90s Chalo moved to Portugal, where he practiced guitar and harmonica on a selfthauth system. Far away from his country, music was the only way to connect to his roots so he started to create original songs based on traditional and urban music styles of Angola and early childhood memories. For the last 20 years, his music got trough a long maturation process, being played with different band sets in many clubs, festivals, embassy ceremonies till he decides to record his debut album named “Kudihohola” in 2015. Chalo is a very versatile musician. It is possible to find him with his 5 piece explosive band touring around Europe, or mixing a Portuguese guitar from the traditional Fado with Angolan music in his trio project, or even on a tireless one man show, playing traditional Angolan guitar chords handled by syncopate and percussive complex rhythms, such as Semba – the precursor of Brazilian Samba - among other traditional urban Angolan styles like Massemba, Kilapanga, Rumba, Kazucuta, Kabetula and Rebita. His vigorous voice sings about the Angolan stories of everyday life saved in chalo´s childhood memories, combined with his life experience of being an Angolan immigrant in Lisbon. The Harmonica joins his instrumental compositions blowing energetic melodies that perfectly match with his new music bringing an old festivity flavored style merged with a contemporary way of songwriting. Chalo is on this mission of recovering the old cult of playing harmonica, pushing it up as a lead instrument.
