Kassa Hajó

Previously, goods could only be transported to Hungary from ports on the eastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea via transshipment. The Ganz Shipyard in Újpest had everything it needed to build ocean-going vessels in Budapest, which was justified not only by the cost-effectiveness of water transport, but also by the fact that the country was practically surrounded by hostile neighbors, both geographically and diplomatically, while its waterways remained intact. In order to facilitate trade with the Middle East (also known as the Levant), the Hungarian Royal Danube Shipping Company was founded in 1936. The Kassa ship was built to their order as the fifth member of the fleet and was launched on May 17, 1939, with very impressive dimensions. The 77-meter-long and nearly 10-meter-wide ship was powered by two 400-horsepower diesel engines and cut through the waves at a deadweight speed of 10.5 knots (approx. 19 km/h). The Kassa carried out transport operations for two years and took part in international maritime trade. With the outbreak of World War II, our seagoing vessels were put into military service, and the Kassa also took part in the evacuation of Crimea. It returned to Hungary in 1947. In the meantime, Kassa became part of Czechoslovakia, and the ship was renamed Debrecen and continued to operate under the auspices of Magyar-Szovjet Hajózási Rt, then DTRT, and finally MAHART. However, maritime shipping had become obsolete, so in 1964 it was decided to take it out of service. It returned to its birthplace, the Újpest Shipyard, under the name Workshop Ship No. 1, from where it was rescued by a foundation in 2004 and renovated at the Révkomárom shipyard as the last remaining piece of the Danube ocean-going fleet. Later, this ship was intended to be the site of the Maritime and Underwater Archaeological Museum, but this plan was never realized. The ship then languished in Újpest again, and from 2017, it functioned as an event venue for four years. The change of management in 2021 was followed by significant remodeling, renovation, and acoustic improvements, and the ship was reimagined. After several years of preparation, the Kassa reopened its doors in 2024 under its original name. The aim of the new cultural space is to attract Budapest's electronic music audience to the deck of the Kassa, anchored on the most spectacular section of the Danube in the city center! Anchored at Batthyány Square, it has found its most suitable role as a complex with several rooms, functioning as both an open and closed event venue and a creative space. The Kassa can fully realize various community functions, and an equally important goal is value creation, closely linked to the cultural diversity of the city.
