MUSIC OF THE COFFEEHOUSES OF OTTOMAN ISTANBUL From the Coffeehouses of Istanbul to Brussels Istanbul in the mid-19th century. In the lively "semai coffeehouses", frequented by firefighters, boatmen, porters and craftsmen, a spontaneous and passionate musical culture flourished. At the same time, the city’s “kıraathane" offered a different musical world, with a repertoire closer to the Ottoman classical tradition. On "27 October", these two musical worlds of Istanbul meet again — this time in Brussels. "Music of the Coffeehouses of Ottoman Istanbul” brings together three remarkable musicians travelling from Istanbul: Çağlar Fidan, Derya Türkan and Nikos Papageorgiou. Through voice, kanun, def, Istanbul kemenche, lavta and tanbur, the trio explores the contrasts — and unexpected connections — between the music once heard in Istanbul’s coffeehouses and reading houses. More than a concert, the evening is an invitation to discover the musical and social memory of a city, and the many communities, traditions and encounters that shaped its sound.
