It will take place in its regular location at La Fira Montjuic and La Fira Gran Via, throughout June 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th. The artistic aspect of the festival deserves another piece on its own (you\u2019ll find it soon on <a href=\"https:\/\/xceed.me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Xceed<\/strong><\/a>). However, these lines are destined to <strong>S\u00f3nar+D<\/strong> and its aim: <strong>\u201cDemocratize those technologies that are beyond the scope of the general public.\u201d <\/strong>S\u00f3nar makes them accessible to the community.<\/p>\n<p>An extremely ambitious project. Back in the day, they also amazed everyone with <strong>S\u00f3nar Calling GJ273b<\/strong>, a series of digital transmissions aiming for the<strong> Luyten Star<\/strong>, the closest one to this inhabitable exoplanet, <strong>12.4 light years<\/strong> away from Earth (around 120 billion kilometres). If they were to be receiving the message and owned a similar communication technology to ours, calculations show that we would get an answer 12.4 years after, adding up to 25 years of experiment, which will coincide with S\u00f3nar\u2019s 50th anniversary.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"S\u00f3nar Calling GJ273b\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/g9GeBKB-0EY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Music has turned into a language for exploration and research. But wait, what type of music are we talking about here? We\u2019ll find out at S\u00f3nar+D. A Control Room will show exactly where the emission is, and we\u2019ll also be able to analyse each one of the <strong>sonic microstories<\/strong> produced by the selected artists (the majority of them will be present at the festival as well). Some of them have even recorded the heartbeats of their future children while they were still in their mother\u2019s womb. Vanguards <strong>Zora Jones and \u00d3lafur Arnalds<\/strong> will explain in detail how these 10 second long messages are compressed and how they\u2019re sent to an unknown place 12.5 light years away from here.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13264\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13264\" style=\"width: 920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13264\" src=\"https:\/\/images.xceed.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/29121704\/sonar-body-1.jpg\" alt=\"sonar calling tromso emission\" width=\"920\" height=\"460\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13264\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: \u00a9 S\u00f3nar Festival<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Astronomy<\/strong> at this S\u00f3nar is a key point. That&#8217;s why <strong>NASA<\/strong> has been present from the very beginning, as well as SETI AIR (Artists In Residence Program), who also have been looking for <strong>intelligent life out in space<\/strong> for a while. MT Media Lab will also attend to carry out a live mapping of the universe, and well-known artists like <a href=\"https:\/\/xceed.me\/artist\/marc-marzenit?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=artist&amp;utm_campaign=180518-BCN-ENG-BLOG-SONAR%2BD%20CONFERENCE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Marc Marzenit<\/strong><\/a> will present musical productions specially designed to be interpreted in a zero-gravity environment and listened through immersive experiences. The IEEC will help attendees in fabricating nanosatellites and putting them into orbit.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3000-companies-are-attending\"><strong>3,000 companies are attending<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>S\u00f3nar+D merges <strong>talent and creativity<\/strong>. It allows the most innovative creators and talents work together in a <strong>Start-up Garden<\/strong> which also serves as an innovation channel for small and big enterprises. Influencers and mentors like Shazam\u2019s founder or the investment head of Universal will share their experiences and advice with other renowned companies. Realities+D will hold a series of actions and talks about this concept, one that is usually much less tangible than we believe it to be. Zach Lieberman will talk about his <strong>augmented reality <\/strong>concept. The creators will be able to go into Mediapro\u2019s laboratory, called S\u00f3nar360\u00ba, where you\u2019ll find <strong>the country\u2019s largest drone<\/strong> (with a diameter of 19 metres). You\u2019ll also be able to produce live music along with the British artist Mileece (Sonic Earth) thanks to SonarMies. <strong>Susan Rogers<\/strong> (who used to record Prince\u2019s voice back in the day) from Google Magenta will present her NSsynth. Gene Kogan will offer a workshop on artificial learning devices. Important characters such as <strong>Ian Rodgers<\/strong> (a pioneer in the inverse price system with Radiohead\u2019s releases) or <strong>Mat Dryhurst<\/strong> (Holly Herndon\u2019s collaborator and one of the blockchain\u2019s referents) will be present at S\u00f3nar+D as well. And last but not least, Mitchell Baker, from Mozilla Foundation, will analyse <strong>the future (somehow present too) of the internet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"artists-the-core-of-sonar\"><strong>Artists, the core of S\u00f3nar<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Like every year, many S\u00f3nar artists are confirmed for S\u00f3nar+D to tell the public about their experiences, either before or after their acts. <strong>Local, cutting-edge names<\/strong> such as Refree, El Ni\u00f1o de Elche, Israel Galv\u00e1n and Isaki Lacuesta will describe how they <strong>broke so many barriers between disciplines<\/strong>. There are, however, two names that stand out from the rest. They are <strong>Ryuchi Sakamoto and Alva Noto<\/strong>, both responsible for closing the festival on Sunday night at <strong>Teatre Grec<\/strong>. In particular, Alva Noto is the representation of S\u00f3nar\u2019s evolution.
