Sunwaves Festival<\/strong> hit the Black Sea<\/strong> resort of Mamaia<\/strong> from the 27th of April until the 1st of May for its 23rd edition. <\/strong>With its trademark extended sets<\/strong> and crystal-clear<\/strong> sound (provided by perfectly placed Funktion-One<\/strong> stacks) the event is surely the world leader when it comes to the minimal end of house and techno. Throughout the 5 days, we picked the 7 moments that marked the 23rd edition and will surely be remembered by Sunwaves’s magical dancers.<\/p>\n

Ricardo supposedly ‘dead’ a few minutes before ending his set<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Ricardo Villalobos<\/a> getting a bit weird while DJ\u2019ing is no secret to anybody in the electronic music community, but this time it looks like he went a bit \u2018over the line\u2019. The Chilean finished his set a few minutes earlier than expected and supposedly \u2018dropped on the floor\u2019.<\/p>\n

According to Amir Javasoul<\/strong>, who took over after Ricardo<\/a>, he didn\u2019t collapse and was totally fine, we will let you judge.<\/p>\n

Marco Carola\u2019s marathon 25 (and a bit more) hour set<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Sunwaves has always been known for letting artists play longer sets than what they\u2019re used to, but Marco Carola<\/strong><\/a> took it to another dimension. The real marathon man came to this year\u2019s edition of with the idea of beating his own record.<\/p>\n

Thousands of Music On<\/strong> devotees (with merchandise and tattoos included) filled the main stage during the whole marathonic set, and Marco<\/a> definitely delivered what they were looking for. His trademark brain-melting\u00a0tech house<\/strong>\u00a0sent the crowd into a frenzy every time the beat dropped. With the Neapolitan, the breakdowns sound more dramatic<\/strong>, laying down his very own bass cuts<\/strong> and Traktor effects<\/strong>. The bass filled weapons were paired with old school classics<\/strong> like Peletronic\u2019s version of \u2018White Lines<\/strong>\u2019 by Grandmaster Flash<\/strong>, \u00a0\u2018Show Me Love<\/strong>\u2019 or Chez Damier<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s infectious \u2018Can You Feel It<\/strong>\u2019. An admirable deed that has surely increased Marco<\/a>\u2019s legend… will he go over the 26-hour mark in his return to Mamaia?<\/p>\n

Vatos Locos 42 hour showcase<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Another feat that must be mentioned. The Vatos Locos<\/strong> crew came to close the last day of the festival and ended up doing 18 hours more than expected.<\/p>\n

An incredible mix of rolling<\/strong>, bass-heavy tech house<\/strong>, minimal bombs<\/strong>,\u00a0house cuts<\/strong> that cheered the crowd up and even some hints to techno<\/strong> were thrown throughout the 42 hours.<\/p>\n

VL\u2019s head honcho Hector<\/strong><\/a> clearly stated it wasn\u2019t a competition to see who can play for longer. We were there and we could not agree more with him, the vibe at Stage 3 was genuinely so amazing that the artists simply kept going. On the booth you could only see a bunch of good friends purely enjoying music and celebrating, it did not feel forced at all. Chapeau Vatos Locos.<\/p>\n

Stage 4 (especially on Saturday)<\/h3>\n

As usual, Stage 4 was reserved mostly to the Romanians. The sun-blessed<\/strong> tent that overlooks the beautiful Black Sea offered the best that the country has to offer, together with other international selectors from the scene. Their particular style of mixing, full of seamless blends<\/strong> and cuts made in the middle of tracks, coupled with a lot of unreleased and atmospheric material<\/strong>, made every minute spent there very enjoyable.<\/p>\n

However, Saturday daytime felt particularly good; Melchior Productions Ltd<\/strong><\/a> and his unbelievable live set, followed by Sonja Moonear<\/strong><\/a>, Ion Ludwig<\/strong><\/a>, Charlie<\/strong><\/a> and Cally<\/strong> all delivered a true masterclass in diversity while playing, what made it all exciting from minute one. Priku<\/strong><\/a> gave an outstanding performance as well, giving us one of the most memorable sets of the festival.<\/p>\n

Craig Richards b2b Seth Troxler (and when Seth got stuck in The Matrix)<\/h3>\n

The b2b between these two titans did not go unnoticed. Among all the loopy house and techno, the electro and acid<\/strong> A-game records that the pair brought with them felt like a breath of fresh air to our ears. The Fabric resident<\/strong> went more into the electro side, while Seth<\/a> waved into more \u2018techy\u2019 sounds, making it a match made in heaven where the random disco sounds were thrown quite often too.<\/p>\n

Special mention to the moment where Seth Troxler<\/strong><\/a> got carried away by the music a bit too much.<\/p>\n

Peggy Gou\u2019s debut<\/h3>\n

Yet again, Peggy Gou<\/strong><\/a> proved diversity remains key. The up-and-coming Korean artist based in Berlin congregated a huge mass at the main tent and she didn\u2019t disappoint. Punchy<\/strong> tracks like Green Velvet<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s edit of Paul Woolford<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s \u2018Erotic Discourse<\/strong>\u2019 blended among more soulful cuts<\/strong> like Peggy<\/a>\u2019s very own \u2018It Makes You Forget<\/strong>\u2019 and the house sounds<\/strong> of \u2018Up North<\/strong>\u2019 by Polarius<\/strong>, while her infectious<\/strong> moves in the DJ booth made the heating crowd fall in love.<\/p>\n

Her debut at Sunwaves was definitely one for the books<\/strong>, proving why she\u2019s here to stay.<\/p>\n
