At this point we have seen (almost) everything. The reinvented spaces in electronic music are warehouses par excellence. But experience and time have led our industry to find shelter in all sorts of spaces. Former churches, bunkers, caves and now… airports!
Berlin’s Tegel Airport closed its doors in 2020. Although its creative potential was already identified the next year with the arrival of sound art festival Sonambiente Berlin TXL. But it is only now that it has been fully reactivated.
In the heart of a distinctive orange-coloured Brutalist building, whose surroundings are protected as a monument, a new cultural hub has been created. On 30 September, “Lift Off” opened the Alte Frachtkantine, the former canteen of the TXL airport. The event had a capacity of 700 people with artists such as Mareena, Philipp Johann Thimm, Lisbird and Saraab in the booth. On top of its music offer, the aptly named Turbulence TXL hosted workshops, lots of art, performances, a bazaar, ping-pong and food and beverage areas.
Where will the future hold for this iconic new German clubbing location? It’s only a matter of time before we find out. Stay tuned to their socials because Turbulence TXL is already on the move!
