Hello Azakiwe! Thanks a bunch for having us in this exclusive Xceed interview. Let’s kick it off with the basics, how’s life treating you? Are you happy with how your 2023 has been shaping up as it’s nearing the finish line?
2023 has truly been a standout year for me! Witnessing the success of my collaboration with Boogie Vice and N You Up has been nothing short of incredible. And, of course, tying the knot with the love of my life is the cherry on top. Overall, it’s been a fantastic journey so far!
Let’s rewind a bit to the teenage Deep Aztec who was just starting to tinker with DJ gear. If you could chat with that younger you, what advice would you give him? Is there a standout moment from those days that left a mark on you as an artist?
Reflecting on my younger self, Deep Aztec, I’m struck by the fearless attitude he possessed. Those days were brimming with standout moments—I wouldn’t even know where to begin! It’s crazy how, as I’ve grown and become more ‘clued up,’ I’ve found myself tapping into that youthful, unhesitant energy. With maturity comes a tendency to overthink, but young Deep Aztec didn’t bother with that at all.
If I could speak to my younger self, I’d tell him, ‘You did everything with unshakable self-belief, and here you are now—this is your well-deserved pat on the back. Stay curious, stay bold’.
Starting my own record label was a decision I made to reclaim my creative freedom. I didn’t want anyone else telling me what kind of music to make or how to make it.

You’re quite the self-taught creator, always evolving. What’s been your secret sauce in this journey? Share your biggest takeaway from creative roadblocks.
Thanks for the kind words—I try to keep things authentic! One of my biggest secrets to navigating this journey is unwavering belief in my ideas. I’ve never let self-doubt creep in when I set out to achieve something. Allowing the music to shape itself without obsessing over the end goal has been a liberating approach for me. Plus, a dash of stubbornness has ensured I never back down from what I want to pursue. It’s all about staying true to the creative process and embracing the journey as it unfolds.
Your versatility in performances is something that clearly stands out. How do you craft your live sets? What’s the percentage of spontaneity in them? Got any quirky anecdotes to share?
Preparing for a live performance is a whole journey in itself, and the electric anticipation of the crowd’s energy is a powerful motivator. It’s like a surge of fuel that propels me to explore new horizons and aim for greater achievements.
What’s intriguing is the subtle shift in my sound and style during these live moments, distinct from the rehearsals. There’s this magical spontaneity that kicks in, a transformation where the music takes the reins. It’s like becoming a vessel, surrendering to the current of the music. In those instances, the music becomes a guide, steering me towards creating something truly unique and extraordinary with each live performance. Reflecting on my early days as a live act, after every show, I’d go through the videos that my wife would make during my performances. Every 30 seconds, all I’d hear was my wife screaming “Sing” because I’d forgotten my lyrics, ha-ha! That experience pushed me to improvise more so that nobody in the audience would know that I forgot to sing. It’s funny how those challenges fuelled creativity and added a whole new layer to the live experience.
Above all that, you’re also the head honcho at Mfengu Records and Turn Left Recordings. What led you to start your own label, and how do you balance that role with your personal growth as an artist?
Starting my own record label was a decision I made to reclaim my creative freedom. I didn’t want anyone else telling me what kind of music to make or how to make it. I wanted the freedom to release music across different genres, without being confined to just one.
Being able to release music across genres allows me to fully explore my artistic range and express myself without limitations. It gives me the opportunity to follow my instincts and create music that truly represents who I am as an artist. Whether it’s house, funk, hip-hop or electronic, I can release whatever genre I feel inspired to create.
Having my own label means I have complete control over my artistic journey. I can make decisions that align with my vision and values, without compromising my creativity.

Having my own label means I have complete control over my artistic journey. I can make decisions that align with my vision and values, without compromising my creativity. This level of autonomy allows me to create music that is authentic and true to myself, which in turn helps me connect with a diverse audience who appreciate the depth of my musical versatility.
Owning my own record label has given me the opportunity to shape my career the way I want. It’s a constant reminder to embrace the freedom that comes with being an independent artist. I’m excited to continue challenging myself and creating music that resonates with listeners across different genres.
In 2021, your debut album ‘Healing Frequencies’ dropped, showcasing a blend of influences with a strong instrumental presence. What’s up Deep Aztec’s sleeve for the coming months? Is 2024 going to be the year for another significant release?
In 2024, get ready for an electrifying year filled with an abundance of releases! I am thrilled to announce that I have an upcoming release on the prestigious Glasgow Underground label, curated by the incredible Kevin McKay. But that’s not all, my musical journey continues alongside my talented brothers in music, Boogie Vice and N You Up. We are cooking up something special that will leave you craving for more. I must confess, I absolutely adore surprising people, so I won’t spill all the juicy details just yet. Stay tuned for an unforgettable musical experience!
Your music has received support from the biggest names, from Jamie Jones to Honey Dijon! Quite a luxury, but surely, like all of us, you always aim for more. Is there any particular goal you have yet to achieve?
I am truly grateful for the achievements I have attained with my music. Through dedication and applying myself wholeheartedly, I have realized what I set out to achieve. It’s incredible to witness the power of the mind when it is focused on a passion.
As I continue on my journey, I have learned not to fixate on specific outcomes. It’s all part of the process of maturing and gaining a deeper understanding. However, I must admit, I am still the same dreamer.
What’s the current state of the electronic scene in South Africa, and where do you see it heading? What sets it apart from other continents?
The present landscape of the South African electronic scene is incredibly captivating. It is fascinating to witness the multitude of talented artists who are consistently releasing exceptional work. Moreover, the scene has garnered attention from international artists who are seeking inspiration from our local talents. However, there is still a sense of untapped potential, and we are eagerly anticipating the moment when we can truly elevate the scene to the next level.

What sets our electronic scene apart is the vibrant spirit of our nation. South Africans have an innate ability to infuse any artistic endeavour with our unique touch, adding a distinctive flair that truly makes it our own.
One thing that I’d love to see with our electronic scene is for it to evolve into a thriving industry, rather than just a scene. We have an abundance of talented individuals with innovative ideas and creative minds, and I firmly believe that with the right support and collaboration, we can transform our scene into an industry.
Are there any neighboring countries with artists or projects we should definitely keep an eye on?
Certainly! I’m thrilled to announce my project on Glasgow Underground, collaborating with the talented wordsmith Black Soda, hailing all the way from Namibia. She has worked with prolific artists from Europe and her unique style is truly amazing.
