GreenWorld Festival – The green revolution on the dancefloor

By Constancia Moreno

June 30, 2023

It is no longer a cliché but a reality. It’s now or never. Sustainability and the environment are inherent to any project with an impact on our planet and in the music industry, we have very clear leading examples. GreenWorld Festival in Tenerife has been gathering the best of electronic music on the island for more than 20 editions.

But its added value lies in its clear green intentions, which edition after edition reduces the impact of the event on the environment, making it one of the most sustainable in Spain.

From the beginning we have tried to honour the name of the festival. The image of a festival that lasted so many hours was so sad because of the amount of waste generated by the cups and containers. Over time we have gone further, eliminating the use of paper tickets and promoting 100% digital ticketing.

LEADERS IN MUSIC

GreenWorld started the season with a grand opening on the 8th of April and a colourful line-up featuring artists such as Luciano, minimal and micro-house Raresh and Manda Moor. But GreenWorld is not resting, and on July 8th they will be doing magic again with their ‘Summer Edition’. For the occasion, the event has signed masters of the industry such as Jamie Jones, Paco Osuna and Richy Ahmed.

These headliners will be joined by a line-up of local talent on which GreenWorld has put great effort with a second stage. All this, to support the emerging Canarian talent pool and to serve as “a launching platform to give visibility to those who are starting their careers”, according to the organisers.

DANCING FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

GreenWorld Festival has transcended the limits of conventional entertainment since its creation. With the philosophy of creating environmentally friendly experiences and a vision for the future, the Tenerife event carries out different actions in each edition that allow it to break green records year after year.

From recycled collectible cups, shared transport and ecological merchandising to collaborations with brands such as Nea that help preserve corals. GW develops a wide range of initiatives that makes them leaders. But behind these achievements there are great challenges that the organisation admits have to be faced, although now both the island and the administrations are better prepared.

A perfect visitor is the one who uses the buses we provide in order to reduce private transport. The one who uses the waste containers and throws it in the right one. Just with those two small actions, if we combine it with the thousands of people, it would be a good grain of sand to continue on the path of goals we have set.

And once all of the above is in place, the most complicated and important part comes: instilling the green revolution in the audience. The implication and environmental awareness of the GreenWorld visitors are key to the development of the festival. A festival that takes on the role of an educator beyond everything that the music industry entails.

Now that you know a bit more about the story behind GreenWorld Festival 2023 and sustainable events, will you change the way you enjoy electronic music? We hope so, because sustainability, sooner rather than later, will be the only way to continue enjoying it in the long run.
